The Story of the Exodus by Marc ChagallExodusPrintsmall

When we think of a Marc Chagall painting we imagine vivid colors, flying people, and memories. Chagall also created images from Jewish life and Biblical stories.

At this time, specifically for Passover, The Temple Museum is pleased to exhibit from the collection, The Story of the Exodus by Marc Chagall, in the Sanctuary Loggia. This exhibit includes 20 original works from the 24 vibrant, full color lithographs that visually take the viewer through the key moments of the dramatic Exodus story.
The other four pieces are currently on exhibit at The Temple-Tifereth Israel Gallery at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. The portfolio is number 188/250, printed in 1966, by Fernand Mourlot.

A true highlight of the exhibition is the text that accompanies each of the images specifically written for this exhibit by Rabbi Roger C. Klein. His comments probe and enrich one's understanding of the meaning of the Biblical story. In his introduction Rabbi Klein explains, "Marc Chagall's Exodus, presented here in 24 lithographs, focuses neither on the doctrinal, the institutional, nor the cosmic. His Exodus is the story of people: of the masses whom Chagall evidently admires and loves and of the passionately devoted and deeply human leaders who feel the spark of the divine and willingly and reverently participate in a process they cannot fully

To accompany this exhibit, a special display of books on Marc Chagall will be featured in the Lee and Delores Hartzmark Library. Please remember that there is no cost for members to visit The Temple -Tifereth Gallery at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. You are welcome to visit the four Chagall pieces on display there.

The Story of the Exodus was a generous gift to The Temple Museum's permanent collection by the Meldon family in memory of Rhoda Goldberg Meldon.
